Only in isolation does the yearning get unraveled
Secrecy of night is the sanctuary unparalleled
Close your eyes and thoughts from empty, earthly clutter
Revel in blissful calmness of your gentle heart’s murmur
Gaze up and free your inner eye to grasp His Raining Mercy
And bow your ego down before His Great and Stunning Mastery
The heartbreak you keep hidden from all the world to see
Is the same place that He pours His Resplendent Light and Beauty

The Resplendent Heart in Solitude
Selfless Love
Your rejection of me…
does not reject my du’as for your happiness.
Your indifference to me…
does not negate my yearn for your wellness.
Your path away from me…
does not hinder my path of love for you.
For my love is selfless.
I love you with no desire for a return.
I care for you without reciprocated concern.
My tears call out for your success that is endless
I think about you despite your lack of awareness.
For your moments of joy are my ecstatic bliss.
Your passion for knowledge brings warmth to my soul
Your love of poetry flows through the blood of my bones
Your sincere longing for God is the ultimate goal
That has permeated my being and rendered me whole.
This poem is not about a specific person, it is expressing the sentiment and state of selfless love. A lot of people may interpret this poem to mean that the writer has just been “rejected” from a lover, however that is not the case. I like to step into the shoes of other people, and try to understand how they may feel. There are also many levels and dimensions of rejection. A person may feel rejected by a child, a teacher, a community, an ideology, or a religious institution. The last couple of lines indicate that the only thing worth taking out of the “rejector” is its yearning for God. And it is this yearning for God, a separate entity from the rejector itself, that has made the writer feel whole. The rejector itself cannot make the writer feel whole.
Inner Intoxication
This love is unrestrained yet contained
Unveiled in the sacredness of night’s end
Upon the prayer mat this love begins to dance
The barrier of reason no longer holds back
The burning passion of the heart.
Let this inner intoxication come free
And take you out of the ordinary.
God revealed, “He has lied who claims to love Me
but who when night falls sleeps [and leaves] Me.
Does not every lover love to be alone with his beloved?”*
*last quote is from Imam al Haddad’s “Book of Assistance”
I release you
How can I shackle you with the chain of my selfish love?
You belong to the Reality of Permanence
The fire of my passion no longer burns
For your transitory existence.
Now I love you more and without ego
But with a deeper sentiment and credo
Of Divine Unity and Oneness.
Out of my deepest love, I release you!
To this transcendence…
This realm of freedom-bliss!
Magnify the world with your talents and light!
Ascend closer to Him on the eternal Flight!
You inspire us to reach our spiritual height!
May your union with Him grow stronger and bright!
Heartbreak (Two poems)
Begin Anew
When things aren’t going right,
And darkness has overcome light,
Disappointments cloud the heart
The time has come for you to start
Look within and see what’s wrong
Those inner flaws, detested for long
Furnish them and polish your soul
Begin anew, a person more whole
Path to Self-Mastery
One rough heart break after the next
This dunya gives you no time to rest
The ultimate, unrelenting test
That moves our souls to embark on the quest
To aim for self mastery and indifference to pain
The height of success, a noteworthy gain
With Light from above, our mission becomes clear
Let us journey this path in His trust and deep care
i submit to Your will
Dear Most Merciful of those who give mercy
The Originator and Creator of all things plenty
The Greatest Planner, providing endlessly
The Benevolent, Kind, bestowing briskly
I no longer know where I must reside,
Where I must lie?
To what path I must stride?
In the spectrum of life.
I have bumped into many creatures of light
Blinding to the sight
Beauty unbelieving to mind
Wondering how many more of this kind?
I am humbled to dust.
In their presence I must
Acknowledge and Trust
That You know what I must
become.
Guide me to what is best for me,
Encouraging my soul to be happy
A body and mind that is free
For this I ask and I plead
Grant me victory.
Commotion of the soul
The imagination is like fire
The intellect like steel
The body fans the flames of desire
While the Heart-Judge sets the deal.
In all this commotion
The spirit yearns to feel
A worldly separation
And ascendance to the Real
In Him there is liberation
The raging soul calms to a breeze
And through this Divine connection
Lies permanence in ease
Foolish Majnun
How foolish was Majnun to fall for Laila?
When her refusal would bring his soul to turmoil?
Everywhere he looked he saw her face, her words.
His skin would tremble out of loneliness and yearn.
“How can one not fall for her?”
He explained to his companions.
“When her tongue is filled with dhikr?
When her words are praise to Him…
When her prostrations are endless,
Her prayers sincere…
Her potential to teach,
Reaching as high as the mountains?
When her voice melodiously recites…
Her brain retaining knowledge bright
Her family, companions sitting by her side…
Constantly absorb her [spiritual] musk and light.
She is like a vehicle to God, you see.
And from His Mercy I constantly plea.
To bestow me her love, I cry lovingly!
How foolish the men, unable to see!”
Weep not
Weep not, my dear.
Though my body is caged in by these bars
Shed not a single tear.
Though my body is miles away from home
And this island bordered by a cascading dome
Shed not a single tear.
Fret not that I can’t talk to you
And listen to your heart beat,
Or place my head in your lap
As the prophet did to sweet ‘Aisha.
I once longed to come close again
And wipe the hairs from your head
Stroke the heads of our children
And embrace you as if we’ve just wed.
I have found a greater joy
In this prison they call Guantanamo Bay.
I have connected to you
In a way no man can understand.
I am embracing you when you bow in salah.
When your sweet fingers count “SubhanAllah”
I feel the warmth of your presence when you cry to your Lord
In the depths of the late hours of night.
In the Tahajjud prayers I feel closest to you
I can almost feel your skin.
For when you remember your Lord so intensely
My spirit unites with yours-its twin.
Through dhikr I connect with you
And the more that you remember Him,
The more I feel your presence
And enjoy bliss through this union.
They say the union of bodies
is the greatest joy…
But my dear I beg to differ.
The union of spirits
surpasses it all.
Because I sit, imprisoned, but in heaven.
Welcome O Pain! I have no choice but to embrace you!
“Happy is the man who avoids hardship, but how fine is the man who is afflicted and shows endurance?”- Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Welcome O Pain! I have no choice but to embrace you!
As slow as the rising sun,
Creeping underneath my bed sheets,
It has come to awaken.
My eyelids open to the crack of light.
My mind recollects the tragic reality.
And I weep.
I weep and embrace this pain,
This incessant friend, this…
Reality I cannot run from!
In open arms I hug and squeeze this pain.
I cry into its fierce, unyielding body.
I accept it for it has been willed to me.
I cry at gems I have seen and lost.
At good memories that have died.
At transience.
I long for perfection, I had hoped…
That this gem would finally…
Be mine!
But no, they keep coming and going.
Parting like the autumn leaves from its tree.
And now I have cried up a sea.
Why do you tease me so?
Why do you rip my heart out,
And laugh in my face?
Why do you present to me?
What I can never have…
The Impossible.
I hold onto pain so tightly
For it is my only companion
Tonight.
And like a good parent,
Pain will slowly let loose…
Its reprimanding grip.
